As we mentioned, simple good ol’ nostalgia can have a pretty profound effect.

Thanks to the Proustian Memory Effect, those connections between smells and memories can in turn produce changes in your emotions.

Little do you know, what you hold in your hand has a long and ancient history.

Today, we stand on the shoulders of giants every time we spray perfume.

In The Beginning…

Through smoke.

Huh?

That’s the definition of “perfume.” Broken down into its Latin components: “per” (through) and “fumus” (smoke).

Even though the word originates in Latin, it was various cultures and nations that created the perfume that we know and love today.

Because perfume dates back to ancient times...

The first known creator of perfume dates goes back 4,000 years ago. A Mesopotamian woman named Tapputi, who is depicted on ancient tablets creating perfume, is the widely credited inventor of perfume.

Ancient Egypitians also famously played a role in the history of perfume.

Back in those days, perfume consisted of either incense, the burning of various woods, or distilled ingredients creating oils and being stored in a jar.

Since the Egyptians had only basic ingredients, some of the most popular scents consisted of fruits, flowers, and woods – not actually that much different from popular scents today.

Although instead of ornate glass bottles, perfume was stored in ornate stone jars, often carved into an image.

It’s time to spray on some monkey water.

But it’s the Ancient Greeks that are credited with developing the first liquid perfume, the beginning of the form that we enjoy today. Arab and Persian cultures kept the tradition of perfume alive, creating a manufacturing process that would allow for more widespread use. In fact, their developments in chemistry followed a more modern process of perfume creation by using distillation.

Many Persian Kings and royals would select a signature scent for themselves that only they could wear and none of their friends and relatives could wear. It seems a little bit petty not letting their friends in on the fun, but maybe they were onto something.

In The Courts…

Perfume continued into the Renaissance, fluffing up the courts of kings and knights.

Up to this point, fragrances consisted of mostly single ingredients.

The first modern perfume was commissioned by Queen Elizabeth of Hungary, creating (and no, we’re not kidding) Hungary Water.

In its modern form, Hungary Water is scented oils mixed with alcohol. The mixing of multiple ingredients created what we now deem to be “notes,” rather than the smell of the fragrance consisting purely of one ingredient, such as a perfume only smelling of lilies.

Of course, it was the Italians in the 14^th century that catapulted fragrance into popularity. Trading posts were a melting pot of ingredients that had been brought back from exploring abroad, leading to the development of perfume making and its popularity.

At this point, fragrance became more of a common fashion accessory, rather than for solely ritualistic purposes alone.

During the times of monarchs in Europe, aristocrats and rulers wore perfume. The famous Louis XV ruled the “la cour parfumée” (AKA “the perfume court”) making everything around him smell divine. Everything was scented, from couches to wigs.

But don’t let the fanciful smells fool you.

You see, there were different standards of cleanliness at the time…

And it doesn’t appear bathing was a routine procedure.

While you can take a card from the playbook of King Louis and wear perfume for its elegance and sophistication, we recommend you maintain proper hygiene. Fragrance can only hide B.O. so much before the scents begin to mingle...

And we definitely don't want that.

And people tend to make the same mistakes when selecting their fragrances…

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a fragrance expert or a complete noob, chances are you’ve made one of these mistakes when choosing a new fragrance.

Mistake #1: Focusing Too Much On The Top Notes

Most of the scent is not actually the top notes (otherwise known as the opening notes). In fact, the top notes are just the beginning. You can’t really tell what a fragrance is like until you’ve been through the whole cycle, which consists of the top notes falling into the heart notes, and finally the drydown into the base notes.

This is probably the most common reason pople complain about their fragrance’s scent. If you’ve never smelt the drydown you may be in for a surprise – good or bad, depending on the frag and your preference.

And that’s why it’s important that you smell a fragrance through its entire cycle, and don’t just focus on the opening notes.

But what about if I’m buying perfume in a department store like Sephora?

Well, that can be tricky. You don’t want to wait for 8 hours in Sephora as you experience the drydown of the notes.

Then again, one of the best ways to pick a new scent is to simply take a smaller size bottle home with you.

Or an even better alternative, try a monthly supply of a scent.

Mistake #2: Believing That Some Scents Are Just TOO Strong

The strength of most smells is relative.

We need to adjust to new smells gradually – anything new or foreign will smell stronger until you’ve become “habituated” (i.e., until the smell becomes normal to you).

For example…

Have you ever left your apartment and gone on vacation for two weeks only to come home and realize your home had a distinctive smell?

While the smell of water damage isn’t good (unfortunately we can’t help you there, we’d recommend speaking with a professional), most homes have a certain smell that isn’t necessarily good or bad.

But eventually it becomes normal, and you don’t even smell it.

The same thing goes for your fragrance.

If you’ve never worn cologne before, you will probably think that spray of luxurious cologne is too “powerful” – and indeed it might be too strong for your tastes…

But often times you just need an adjustment period.

Mistake #3: Not Clearing Your Nose Palette

Have you ever tried smelling new scent and after scent? Eventually they all mix together and get stuck in your nose.

The common trick to fixing this issue is to take a good whiff of coffee…

But just in case you don’t carry a can of Maxwell House with you everywhere you go, there is another way.

You can try smelling your skin on your forearm or hand. Your skin is probably neutral enough to “reset” your nose.

People may laugh at you as you stand around in a department store smelling your forearm, but jokes on them.

Because you’re actually experiencing the unique and highly refined fragrances before purchasing them.

Mistake #4: Thinking One Fragrance Fits All

Would you think that pair of ripped blue jeans with a 29” waist and 30” length that looks great on you would also look fantastic on everyone else?

No. Fragrance is just like fashion – it matters whose wearing it.

And it’s beyond the common phrase “the man (or woman) maketh the shirt (or crop top).”

A spray of cologne or perfume will have a different result on you than on your friend.  A variety of factors play a role, including but not limited to: where you’re spraying, how you’re storing the frag, and even the mositure and pH levels of your skin!

Mistake #5: Not Experimenting

Just like the infamous Goldilocks trespassing into the hovel home of three bears, she doesn’t know which bowl of porridge or which bed will suit her best until she tries it out (illegally I might add. That’s the definition of Breaking & Entering and she should serve hard time for her crimes).

Too bad you're going straight to jail!

But you don’t have to irritate a family of bears or risk the hot fuzz coming after you to find a fragrance that’s right for you. Trying out a new fragrance every month can lead you in the right direction and introduce you to new scents until you find something you really like.

Or not – you can always keep trying new things indefinitely. Afterall, you only live once.

And yes, we know just how expensive experimenting with finding the right fragrance can be...

Mistake #6: Worrying About The Price

Unfortunately, as mere mortals we are subjected to the price tag on a fragrance. Can fragrances be expensive? You bet. And while there are a wide variety of fragrances out there, for every budget and flavour, sometimes frags remain out of reach.

Maybe you can’t get that 200 mL, $872 bottle of Parfum’s de Marley right now.

But you can take a shot at luxury and get into higher end fragrances without breaking your piggy bank (or going into your overdraft, since it isn’t 1963 anymore and piggy banks are now defunct).

Imagine this…

You get a new bottle of fragrance. You’ve been waiting for weeks, researching fragrances and deciding which one to try next.

Then the bottle finally arrives.

Excited, you spray it a few times on your neck.

And you breathe it in.

Aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!

As the opening notes hit your nose, you relish the scent.

And then a thought occurs to you…

Wait a minute – how do they even make this divine scent?

What kind of magic goes on behind-the-scenes? How do they make this liquid where you can smell a mix of flowers and citrus before a timed release into musks and woods?

Here’s how…

The Beginning

Materials

First off is collecting the materials, whether its plants or synthetic chemicals. While animal products used to be used in fragrance, most brands have since stopped. Instead, synthetic chemicals are created to mimic the organic ingredients to give a more humane approach to developing fragrance.

Synthetic ingredients are also a life saver (literally) for fragrance makers. Not only do animals not have to die, but the procurement of ingredients can be oddly specific (like needing castor from Canadian or Russian beavers) and have a small window of opportunity where a mistake could throw a wrench into the creation process (like a harvest of plants going awry).

Many different materials are now developed artificially. For example, musk, ambergris, and Lily of the Valley are created synthetically. Ingredients like jasmine, sandalwood, and vanilla are still extracted from their natural sources.

Extraction Methods

There are a variety of ways to extract oils from materials. Most of these methods sound fancier than they actually are. Essentially, you squeeze, boil, mash, and grind the oils out of the materials. Not trying to lay down the science too hard, but…

1) Enfluerage

Enfleurage is a fancy thing for a pretty straight forward process.

You put the ingredients (likely flowers in this case) on glass sheets covered with oil. From there, you proceed to grind them against each other until the grease eventually absorbs the materials.

And no, a chimp couldn’t do this (or at least I don’t think so).

Maceration is another method for extraction, but it’s very similar to enfleurage. Instead of using grease, you can use warmed fats to soak up the oils. The fats can then be easily burned off to reveal the oils from the materials.

2) Steam Extraction

The materials are placed in a still – a piece of equipment that distills liquids first by heating, and then cooling to condense the vapour.

As the materials are heated up, the resulting gas passes through tubes before being cooled.

3) Solvent Extraction

The ingredients are placed in rotating tanks and mixed with petroleum ether or benzene.

With time, the plants dissolve and leave behind a concentrated wax. You can then mix the wax with alcohol, which when heated, burns off the wax leaving behind a concentrated oil – which now forms the base of our fragrance.

4) Expression

Very similar to Enfleurage, except the materials are pressed manually (by hand or machine) to extract the oils.

Think of it like hand-squeezing oranges to make orange juice.

The Middle

The oils are then blended together based on a formula concocted by a perfumist.

Obviously, the formula can vary widely and is the “secret recipe” behind a fragrance. Like the Krabby Patty formula, you should keep this under lock and key.

The formula will also determine the level of concentration. The greater the ratio of oils to alcohol, the more concentrated and stronger the fragrance will be.

Fragrances with an Eau De Parfum (EDP) level of concentration will be composed of approximately 15-20% oils, with the rest being alcohol and a small amount of water. As this is highly concentrated perfume, the resulting fragrance will typically last longer and have greater endurance (as well as come with a higher price tag).

On the lower end, Eau De Cologne (EDC) or Eau Fraiche fragrances will have oil compositions of 1-3% and 2-6%, respectively. Remember: the EDC label indicates concentration and does not mean that men’s colognes are weaker in concentration than women’s perfume.

The End

Blending is typically followed by aging. Aging may range from months to many years. Its similar to the aging of alcoholic beverages, where you have much shorter aging for beer compared to a fine 1897 scotch.

At this stage, the fragrance is tested routinely. The aging process allows the different notes to blend together and balance out, creating the top, heart, and base notes we know and love.

From there, its time to bottle it!

Where The Magic Happens

So now you know how fragrance is made.

And even though you know how the proverbial “sausage is made,” I don’t think it lessens the magic of it.

You take a few ingredients and with a little chemistry, turn it into something that can captivate and entice people of all ages.

You’ll hear it thrown around by people that think they know what they’re talking about when it comes to fragrance.

You’ll also see many people mispronounce it.

At the end of the day, it’s an important characteristic when it comes to selecting a fragrance.

What is Sillage?

Sillage, pronounced “see-yazsh,” is the trail of scent that leaves you when you pass by. Many pronounce sillage like it rhymes with “sewage,” which is fine, just don’t let the French hear you say that.

Think of sillage like the water spreading in the wake of a boat on the Seine River. The movement of the boat creates a trail that ripples gently across the surface of the river. In fact, the word “sillage” is a French word, referring to the wake of a boat on water.

In layman’s terms, it’s what everyone around you smells when you move.

If your scent has minimal or weak sillage, it will stay close to your skin and not branch out to the rest of the room. Your proverbial boat will not make big waves as you float by.

However, sillage is not projection…

What’s The Difference Between Sillage and Projection?

If sillage is what others smell when you move, projection is what others smell when you stay still.

Projection has more to do with how strong your scent extends out to others. You have strong projection if a lovely lady across the dance floor can smell your cologne. This isn’t necessarily bad, it just depends on your personal preference and the social occasion.

How Concentration Affects Sillage

Generally speaking, the stronger the concentration of a fragrance, the more powerful the sillage and/or projection.

Concentrations can vary for fragrances, from the lighter Eau De Cologne (EDT) to the stronger Parfum, and everything in between.

However, keep in mind that the lasting power of a fragrance (it’s duration) will not necessarily correlate with sillage. You can put on a solid parfum that lasts 12+ hours, but it may not have the strong sillage that you desire (if that’s your thing).

How to Test Sillage

Naturally, its difficult to determine your own scent trail. So how do we tell how strong our sillage is if we’re concerned about stinking up the party?

A easy test is to simply spray your fragrance in an empty room and then return 5-15 minutes later. Still smell it? The scent probably has strong sillage. You can test different scents with different time periods to see which fragrance has the strongest sillage.

How Scent Notes Affect Sillage

Interestingly, different scent notes can actually affect the strength of sillage. Fruiter, lighter notes will tend to be more volatile and dissipate faster.

If you’re looking for longer lasting and stronger notes that stay in your wake, check out oriental, woody, and even some floral scents as they’ll have a stronger effect.

How to Make Sillage Stronger or Weaker

While we don’t recommend going mad scientist and attempting to add chemicals to your fragrance in an attempt to change the sillage…

No, definitely not that.

But you can make a couple simple adjustments to change your sillage. For stronger sillage, apply a few sprays to an article of clothing. This technique can increase the sillage coming off of a particular piece. Just beware that directly spraying too much can stick to a

clothing (somewhat) permanently, all other factors considered.

For weaker sillage, dap a cotton ball against your skin where you applied fragrance. This will reduce the sillage or projection of a scent.

Finding A Scent That Fits Your Personality

Maybe you’re looking for a quiet scent because you believe in a more subtle approach to expressing your personality.

Or maybe you’re trying to kick the door in at the club and get rocking.

And sometimes you want to vary your fragrance to match your outfit. Why have a loud and proud outfit without a loud and proud fragrance?

So how do you find a scent for every occasion or at the least find a scent that suits your personality?

Well, you’ll have to experiment and have fun with it.

And it doesn’t have to be expensive….

Not Smell Bad

This is the least important and worst reason to wear fragrance.

Do not – I repeat, DO NOT – think that wearing cologne or perfume will cover up bad B.O. or the fact that you haven’t showered in a week.

Actual body odor will come through and mix with your fragrance (not a pleasurable scent) and eventually most fragrances fade over time.

Proper hygiene first. Then fragrance.

Think of a shower as the foundation, and fragrance is on top…

Mood

Probably one of the most overlooked benefits of fragrance is the uplifting effect it can have on your mood.

If you’re feeling playful, put on a fragrance that matches your attitude and outlook.

Fragrance can also shift your mood in a more positive direction.

Feeling blue? Put on an energetic floral scent and whisk away your worries.

Maybe you want to feel grounded and sophisticated? Spray on an oriental woody scent.

Forget caffeine and other pick me ups. Spray on some fragrance to elevate your mood (without the caffeine shakes!).

Attractiveness

Now for one of the most popular reasons people may (or may not) wear fragrance…

Fragrance is more dynamic than most people think. Modifying certain variables will affect the fragrance’s composition and effects.

For instance, the best place to store fragrance is not in a bathroom, despite that this is typically where fragrance is stored. A bathroom is not ideal because the humidity in the environment will be changing frequently (due to steamy showers) which will affect the fragrance over time.

Because fragrance is dynamic, a few sprays of Versace Eros on me will not smell the same on you, since you and I are different.

Even small differences like the amount of moisture on your skin can have a big impact

Seemingly small and unimportant variables can have a long-lasting impact on preserving your fragrance.

How Long Will My Fragrance Last?

A general lifespan for most fragrances will probably be around 3-5 years from the time the bottle is opened. However, its’ not unheard for some frags to be lucky and make it to 10 years. Keep in mind, most fragrances don’t contain an expiration label like you would find on a jug of milk, so sometimes it can be hard to remember when exactly you purchased a particular fragrance if you’re a light user or tend to switch things up.

Ideally, with proper storage, the fragrance will be better preserved and make it past the 5-year mark.

While not opening a fragrance may cause it to preserve its scent, and even may mature the cologne or perfume like an unopened bottle of 102-year-old scotch, there is no guarantee the scent doesn’t expire and mutate into something strange and deviant. That being said, base notes have been known to grow stronger and mature over time, not totally unlike scotch.

Obviously, the chemical makeup of each scent will have a major influence on the long-lasting freshness that is your favorite cologne or perfume. But this tends to be difficult to generalize for obvious reasons.

Like most things, the lifespan is going to vary significantly – so have fun with a fragrance while you still can!

How Do I Tell If My Fragrance Has Expired?

In a sense, the fragrance will start to “mutate.” It may have a slightly sour flavour or just smell plain “off.”

Some scents may smell slightly metallic as the top notes tend to oxidize.

Another sign of expiration is if the colour of the scent has changed, often going slightly yellow or even darker.

Ideally, you should do a test spray of a fragrance on a piece of paper or your worst enemy (just kidding… or are we?) if you haven’t worn that frag in a very long time or you suspect the scent is off.

What Happens If I Wear Expired Fragrance?

Honestly, probably nothing – although bear in mind we’re not doctors.

The worst case is you probably don’t smell as fantastic as you normally do because the fragrance has expired.

How Do I Properly Store My Cologne or Perfume?

The environment you store your fragrance in plays a major part in its longevity. Exposure to high temperatures (which is why you shouldn’t store your cologne in your bathroom no matter how tempting it is) and sunlight are big no-no’s from the Perfume Gods.

What Kinds Of Fragrances Last The Longest?

Interestingly, oriental perfumes and colognes tend to last longest. Oriental scents are composed of notes that include vanilla, cinnamon, musk, amber, and woods.

However, many lighter floral scents will not last as long and will tend to be more “volatile” as they expire faster. In this case, the base notes of a floral scent may actually mature and get stronger while the lighter top notes fade over time.

What’s The Scent Wheel?

And no, before you start to give 1000 Scents credit for inventing the scent wheel, alas, we did not.

The Scent Wheel is actually a fairly popular (and accurate) way to organize and categorize different fragrances.

Essentially the scent wheel is a diagram showing how the major scent families and categories relate to each other. The closer the category on the wheel to each other, the more similar they tend to smell.

There are four broad categories or families of fragrance notes that make up the scent wheel. The major families include, floral, oriental, fresh, and woody. We’ll break each family down into its subgroups, along with the typical notes as well as some example fragrances. So next time you’re looking for a new scent because you know that you just love soft oriental fragrances, you’ll know where to start looking.

What Are Floral Scents?

Sweet and flowery, floral scents are typically composed of (obviously) flowers. They tend to be associated mostly with seasonal spring and summer scents, and are often more likely to be found in female perfumes.

But a lot of people don’t know where to start when building their collection.

So here are five simple steps to building that fragrance collection, whether you’re a guy or a gal interested in cologne or perfume.

#1 What do you like?

The first, and perhaps most important question you should figure out, is what you like.

The world absolutely, positively, 100%, loves with a passion, to tell you what you should and shouldn’t like.

You should like this. You can’t like that.

The big problem with that?

It doesn’t matter. All that matters is what you like and don’t like.

This applies to fragrance, too. It’s not up to someone else whether you like a scent. Maybe it’s too sweet. Or has got too much citrus. Maybe it’s got too much vanilla in the base. Or frankly, maybe the scent just isn’t really your thing.

Only you can decide what you like. Opinions from friends is great! But don’t forget who’s actually wearing the scent and whose fragrance collection you’re building.

So ignore the fragrance Nazis and fashion dictators.

This is probably the most important first step.

#2 Try It On

Fragrance is a mish-mash (yes, that’s the correct technical term that perfumers use) of chemicals and materials, which naturally smell differently on you than it would on me.

A scent will react differently on your body due to a variety of factors. Most notably:

• The oils on your skin
• External moisture in the air
• Where you spray it

And just like trying on new clothes, how do you know if you like a new shirt or new dress if you’ve never tried it on?

Fragrance fits you just like a pair of pants does.

Like how a new pair of jeans can be too big on your waist and too skinny on your ankles, a fragrance can fit you in the exact same way. A fragrance just may not sit right for you.

And that’s okay.

But you gotta try it on first, or you’re never gone know.

#3 Pair It With An Outfit

Different outfits give off different vibes.

Different fragrances give off different vibes, too.

Most outfits can’t be used for every occasion…

So why would a fragrance?

Just like your actual wardrobe, you have to mix and match to find what’s the best combination for you in that particular situation.

#4 Have Fun

If you aren’t having fun trying new scents…

Maybe this hobby just isn’t for you!

1. Hygiene Trumps All

The first rule that MUST be followed is to never cover bad hygiene with cologne. Think of hygiene as the foundation of a house and cologne as the actual house that everyone sees. No one sees the foundation and understandably no one ever says "WOW, Dave, that's a nice foundation," but there wouldn't be that big fancy house there that everyone is drooling over if it wasn't for the foundation... that's you, by the way, the big fancy house that everyone is drooling over. So what exactly do classy men do? They shower everyday and put cologne on AFTERWARDS. This is a simple rule that cannot be overlooked!

2. Switch It Up

Gentlemen, variety is what makes life interesting and it is also what keeps you smelling incredibly good. So do not be the guy that wears the exact same cologne every day. The best strategy that I have found in order to keep aligned with this rule is to keep a collection of 1000 Scents bottles that I can rotate around whenever I feel. In the past, I have stuck with one large bottle that took forever to finish and got super boring (both for myself and those around me) by the end of it. 1000 Scents keeps me supplied with a fresh 8 mL bottle of premium cologne every month so I never get bored and can keep that studly vibe going!

3. Know How and Where to Apply

Many men make some mistakes when applying fragrance. One of the more common mistakes is the spray and walk through. This is simply a waste and does not allow your body to absorb the fragrance the best and hold on to it for longer periods of time. Another major mistake that many men make is spraying the fragrance on their clothes. Look, for the fragrance to project outwards and seize all the admiring stares, it must be placed on a pulse point (of which your clothes have 0 of). Some common pulse points that fragrance users take advantage of are the neck, chest, inner elbow, and inner wrist. Another reason you shouldn't spray fragrance on your clothes on top of these other reasons (as if you needed more reasons) is that the oil in fragrances can damage your spiffy clothes and who wants that?! 4. Do Not Layer Fragrances

If you had the chance to take a look at that blog post of ours (or maybe you already know because you're a smarty pants) you would know that fragrance is best applied on moisturized skin. Whatever moisturizer you use should be scentless as to not layer fragrances. Your body wash and deodorant should also not have a super heavy overpowering scent. This is simply because most of us buy fragrances so that we can smell like that particular fragrance and knock people's socks off, but if we are using a bunch of other over powering fragrances it takes away from the impressive colognes/fragrances we are wearing.

5. Do Not Drown Yourself

We've all been there, thinking about how good we smell with just 3 sprays of our cologne and just imagining how great we would smell with 10 sprays... the power attained from this would be unimaginable because more is always better right? WRONG! Now it depends on the concentration of the fragrance (whether it is an EDP, EDT, or other concentration), but generally 2-5 sprays is plenty enough for a few hours. As mentioned, this is all subjective to the concentration, brand, specific fragrance from that brand etc., but keep in mind over powering cologne can sometimes be just as bad as body odor. This doesn't mean you can't use more cologne if you would like, but make sure that you are spacing the sprays out across the day so that the cologne has time to wear off and isn't over the top.

Now I am sure that many of you gentlemen are already employing many if not all of these rules, but I hope I have provided you with some knowledge that will help you to maintain (or perhaps even improve) your already impeccable selves. 

Whether you're getting changed at the gym and its the guy on the other side of the locker room emptying half a can of Axe likes its going out of style (it is!) or you're seated at a restaurant beside a dude that, well it might be covering up his first date armpit sweat, a bystander such as yourself shouldn't be able to taste his equally smelly cover-up.

Yes, we're talking about the douche elephant in the room: BODY SPRAY.

Body Spray has granted young men and women the power to apply a cataclysmic amount of over powering, crude fragrance for everyone within a kilometer radius to enjoy.

No class, and all sass.

And that's not good for either guys or girls.

So, without further ado, let's dive deep into why body spray is awful.

Trashy Scent

You know it from a mile away: body spray smells like trash.  The scent is overpowering when you're up close and just all around smells "cheap."  Body spray smells "cheap" because it smells extremely unnatural.  Although colognes are often created synthetically, body sprays do not even closely resemble the actual scent.  

A body spray that's supposed to contain hints of chocolate doesn't actually smell like chocolate.  Instead, it smells like artificial, pseudo-Franken-chocolate.

The lack of resemblance to the genuine scent is instantly recognizable once you smell it.

And that's why body spray smells like trash.

You're Forced To Over Spray

Body spray tends to only last for a very short period of time, often 2 hours or less on average.  Although the duration of a fragrance depends on a multitude of factors, including skin moisture, spraying environment, and the fragrance's chemistry among other factors, most colognes do not fizzle and die an unruly and short death after 52 minutes.

Because of this, young gents and ladies tend to apply more spray in the morning, after the gym, before a big date, etc.  In doing so, their body spray just becomes more over powering in the short-term and doesn't actually extend the duration of the scent by all that long.

Combined with the fact that body spray atomizers act more like a can of Febreze than they do an actual quality fragrance atomizer, thereby people tend to just hold their finger down on the trigger like there's no tomorrow.

Cheap Bottles

You could disagree with all of the above, but if for no other reason you should prefer cologne/perfume over body spray than for simply the design of the bottles themselves.

The comparison isn't even close.

You know when you see a cologne bottle that actual time, money, and effort was spent into designing the bottle and giving the wearer the satisfaction of looking at it.  When you look at a bottle of body spray, you know the bottle was designed purely, 100% for the sole purpose of selling for mass consumption.

It's very clear that there's no craftsmanship whatsoever in a can of body spray.

Your girlfriend isn't going to be impressed by a bottle of body spray.  But, she just might be impressed by a bottle of Versace Eros sitting on your bathroom counter...

You're Getting Ripped Off

You're spending $5-$20 on a cheaply designed can of a cheap scent with a cheap duration.

While understandably body spray is targeted at those with less disposable income (thereby teenagers and young adults primarily), there is no excuse for parading around a trashy scent when there are much better options available.

Put it into perspective.  You could run down to Wal-Mart and pick up a more expensive, "high quality bottle of body spray" (hint: there isn't any) for maybe $15 or $20 bucks.  Or, you could get a premium, designer cologne with a 1000 Scents Cologne Subscription for only $19.99.

1. Keep Your Fragrance(s) In a Consistent Cool Place

Heat is the number one enemy of all fragrances! Heat will degrade the oils that make a fragrance and leave it smelling different, not lasting as long, and not projecting as much as it should. You should not store it in a place that has temperature fluctuations either *hence a "consistent" cool place*. The rapid change between hot temperatures and cold temperatures will have detrimental effects on the fragrance as well. Many people argue that storing scents in the fridge is the best storage and in many cases it is a good bet, but for all intents and purposes it might be best to avoid the fridge due to many different characteristics and temperatures of different fridges.

2. Keep Your Fragrance(s) In a Dry Place

Humidity is right up there with heat on the list of fragrance destroyers. So with point one and two we immediately see that you should be evacuating your fragrances from the bathroom that you may or may not be storing them in currently. Every single time you or your family runs a shower or bath, the temperature and humidity rise rapidly. So the bathroom is neither cool, dry, or consistent making this one of the absolute worst places to store fragrances! 

3. Keep The Lights Off

Both natural and manmade light can breakdown the oils in fragrances much like heat and leave them not performing as well as they should. This is why fragrances should be kept in a dark place. 1000 Scents outer twist up bottles are opaque and therefore let no light access the bottle, but if you hate variety for some reason and have elected to buy massive bottles that take forever to finish, you likely have a clear or at least somewhat clear glass bottle that will allow light to destroy the fragrance. You should be storing these bottles in a drawer or box (that isn't in the bathroom) that will block any light from entering unless opened to use.

4. Keep The Bottle Closed/Capped

Air exposure, as unfortunate as it may be, degrades fragrances as well due to oxidization. Although it is very difficult to cut air exposure to nothing, efforts should still be made in order to minimize it. Keeping 1000 Scents outer twist up bottle twisted down when not in use will help to minimize air exposure to the nozzle of the atomizer and therefore the fragrance. 

5. Do Not Shake!

It might seem like shaking your fragrance and "mixing it up" before spraying will provide a more even and therefore better smelling cologne/fragrance, but this is definitely not the case. We promise you, the fragrances you are wearing are properly blended and will stay that way. We're talking about your fragrances here not the orange juice that you just pulled out of the fridge. Shaking fragrances introduces bubbles and agitates the oils which introduces more oxidization much like exposure to outside air. Really there is no point in shaking a fragrance because it only ruins the scent and does nothing beneficial in return.

6. Never Use Plastic

Plastic has harmful effects on the environment, but it also has harmful effects on fragrances! The problem with plastic is that it is a great deal more porous than glass and can absorb the scents where as glass doesn't at all. Another reason why glass is used for fragrances as opposed to plastic is because it doesn't react with what you store in it. This is why chemistry labs are outfitted with glass instead of plastic. Some people use smaller plastic bottles of fragrance for convenience in traveling, but glass is the much better choice. Really, the best of both worlds here is a 1000 Scents order which is both smaller and convenient for travelling and is made out of glass in order to properly preserve the fragrance within. Aside from sounding like confusing directions at a French train station, the difference between EDT and EDP is important for cologne lovers to know about.

So read on, and take a walk into the light and may you never be discombobulated at the cologne counter (or website *1000 Scents*) again...

"EDT" and "EDP" indicate the concentration of the actual "perfume" in the fragrance (not to worry, gents, we're using perfume inclusively here).  Essentially, the labels EDT and EDP describe the ratio of the oils (the actual "perfume") to the remaining liquid (alcohol, and oftentimes water). On 1000 Scents bottles the colour of label indicates whether the scent is an EDP or EDT! It is quite simple, the grey labels indicate that the scent is an EDP while the white labels indicate that the scent is an EDT! For example, the cover photo for this blog shows that Prada Luna Rossa, JPG Cologne, and Givenchy Pi are EDTs while the Coach Platinum is an EDP.

The greater the concentration of the oils, and the less diluted the fragrance, oils, the stronger and longer lasting the fragrance.

Why would fragrance makers water down their own creation?  Because otherwise the fragrance can be quite potent.

Very potent.

Diluting the fragrance also makes it easier to actually spray.

In addition to the common EDT and EDP, there are other labels you may have come across.  We'll begin by breaking down the least concentrated to the most concentrated...

Eau Fraiche

Eau Fraiche is the least concentrated of all fragrances, typically with about 1-3% concentration. This type of fragrance is highly uncommon and we wouldn’t be surprised if you’ve never actually came across a cologne that was labelled Eau Fraiche.

Eau De Cologne (EDC)

Although not exclusively applied to cologne, EDC has the lowest oil concentrations of the five major fragrance classifiers, and is noted for often containing strong notes of citrus.  Eau De Cologne has a concentration of around 2-5%, and therefore, lasts approximately 2 hours, depending of course on the number of sprays applied, among other factors.

EDC isn't as common, and despite the word "cologne" in the name, most colognes aren't typically EDC.  In fact, in 1000 Scent's over 250+ cologne selections that we carry, little to none are actually EDC.

You're far more likely to find the following name on the colognes we offer as well as in stores...

Eau De Toilette (EDT)

EDT is a much more popular type of fragrance.  With a concentration ranging between 10 -15%, EDTs tend to dissipate faster than other, more concentrated types of fragrance on this list. That being said, EDTs tend to offer the best bang for a wearer’s buck, as they tend to be cheaper than other types. 

Along with EDPs, EDTs are the most common types of cologne and we guarantee that you’ve at least owned a bottle of EDT, or are currently wearing a cologne with this concentration.

Eau De Parfum (EDP)

Eau De Parfum is a very common concentration of cologne (or perfume).  EDP is more concentrated than Eau De Toilette (EDT), with a concentration between 15-20%. EDPs tend to last between four to five hours, depending of course on the number of sprays. They also aren’t often that much more expensive than their slightly less concentrated EDT counterparts.

Interestingly, EDPs tend to be slightly nicer on sensitive skin.

And now, with the most concentrated type of fragrance...

Parfum

With a concentration of 20% or higher, generally within the 20-30% range, Parfums make up the most concentrated type of fragrance on this list. And no, Parfums aren’t just for the ladies, but for gents, too!

Parfums may last anywhere around six to eight hours due to their high concentration.

Interestingly, EDPs tend to be slightly nicer on sensitive skin. Why? Because Parfums are less diluted, thereby having less alcohol, which can make the scent easier on those with sensitive skin.

Now, with your knowledge of all the major fragrance classifiers you can go out armed with this knowledge to test and amass various colognes of your choosing.

1. Start (and actually finish) a puzzle. Yeah I know, how basic right? Would this list be complete if I didn't throw in the "do a puzzle" point though?

4. Start learning something new. This could be anything you've always wanted to learn like a language, a new instrument, a new topic etc., but have kept on putting it off. The difference between then and now is that there are absolutely no excuses anymore.
5. Look at pictures of puppies/dogs. No explanation is needed for this one.
6. Organize that cluttered Tupperware drawer or cupboard. Apply this to all the other areas of your house if you're that neat freak that's always been too busy!

Sometimes, you get a funny look from a bystander half way across the room.  Other times it seems that all the girls seem to bat their eyes at you like you're Brad Pitt.

Or sometimes, perhaps the worst, 48 minutes after applying it you can't even smell it.

Not even a whiff.

It can seem confusing at times, how you should apply your cologne for best results.

Which is why we thought it might be handy to offer you some pointers, and at the very least, some sympathy for fellow cologne lovers, or even newbies just getting into the scent game.

So read on and take your cologne game to the next level.

Tip #1: Apply After The Shower

You should apply your cologne of choice in the morning, when you first get out of the shower.  While you stand there flexing in the mirror, the perfect bathroom lighting Instagram-worthy, you should cut the posing a few seconds short and apply cologne.

(What?  You mean you don't spend so much time posing in the mirror that you're late for work in the morning?  Well, this is embarrassing...)

Jokes aside, spraying cologne on immediately after you get out of the shower is the best time to apply it.

Your pores will be more open and better able to hold onto the scent.  The moisture on your skin will also lock in the cologne (so long as your skin has been toweled and is not still wet, which would be counterproductive).

Tip #2: Apply on Pulse Points

The pulse points on your body (ie., where your pulse can be felt) are the warm areas on your body.  These points include the wrist, neck, and chest.

Spraying cologne on these areas will allow your body to better retain the scent and allow it to flourish throughout the day.

Although technically the back of the knees and ankles are also pulse points, unless you're a chimpanzee and draw with your feet, your better off not spraying there, and instead staying with your upper body pulse points.

(Don't forget to have a glass of gin after work).

That also includes other areas in the lower extremities (yes, we'd recommend not doing that).

Tip #3: Apply Vaseline

Applying small dabs of Vaseline to your chosen pulse point prior to spraying will also enhance the longevity and strength of your cologne.

When we say dabs, we do mean dabs. So no need to worry about coating your neck or wrist with greasy slabs of Vaseline.

A touch of Vaseline in the right spot could do wonders for you.

Give it a try.

Tip #4: Make Use of an Atomizer Spray Bottle

If you find that your cologne tends to dissipate throughout the day, it's not a bad idea to do a quick spray later in the day.

While you shouldn't load up again 2 hours after you get out of the shower, an atomizer bottle allows you to easily transport your cologne and conveniently give a quick spray later.

Portable atomizers can be carried in a suit jacket pocket, brief case, and backpack quite easily.

Tip #5: Don't Over Spray

A common mistake most men make when applying cologne is over spraying their cologne.  This will result in the random bystander half way across the room staring at you with a funny look on his face as soon as you walk into the room.

While recommendations for number of sprays vary, anywhere from 2-4 sprays is ideal for most men.

However, the golden rule should be that other people can only smell your cologne within arm's length away.

Which is not to say that your cologne should be weak and non-existent.  Cologne should be bold if you want it to be bold.

It should also be subtle, if you want it to be subtle.

But there is definitely a point at both ends of the spectrum, where cologne is under performing and over performing.

The key, of course, is to find a happy medium.

Note: for 1000 Scents customers, the smaller 8 ml bottle releases a smaller amount of spray compared to a much larger, conventional cologne bottle, so you may need 1-2 sprays depending on your preference (or you may not, as well).

Tip #6: Hold roughly 3-6 inches away from your body

Putting the tip of the nozzle right against the skin is certainly not ideal.

And neither is spraying at a complete arm's length away.

Spraying your cologne roughly 3-6 inches from the desired pulse point will result in the best capture of the scent.

Tip #7: Don't walk into the mist

A common recommendation for applying cologne is to spray... and walk into the mist!

(We're spraying cologne, not having a hippie water fight).

This technique results in poor capture of the scent and is far from optimal in terms of both strength and endurance.

In fact, when you spray and walk through the mist, you're not really applying the cologne to your body.

Instead, you're applying it to the air in your bathroom, and simply walking through it, hoping that some particles will cling to your body.

Thus, we don't agree with this particular recommendation. 

Tip #8: Apply everyday to get used to the habit

The best way to develop the habit of wearing cologne, is, well, wearing cologne!

In fact, applying cologne everyday will get you used to the habit.  Frequent application will also lead to you developing a signature scent that others will begin to associate with your presence.

And whether, you're new to using cologne, or a veteran, don't forget to really take the cologne in and appreciate the smell, every once in awhile.

And finally...

Tip #9: Experiment

We're all different.

Wearing cologne is really a chemical reaction involving the particular ingredients in that cologne, the humidity of the air, the moisture on your skin, the unique heat patterns of your skin...

And so no recommendation is exact.

It is just that, a recommendation.

So take the time and experiment.

Two sprays today on your neck, right after the shower, five sprays on your wrist tomorrow.

Find what works best for you, because at the end of the day, it is, believe it or not, what you like the best.

Cologne is very personal to an individual.  Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

However, if you don't understand the difference, you might be as confused as a hermit hippy crawling out from under his rock and venturing back to society only to find that Canada has become a bit of a ghost town...

Well, okay.  Maybe fragrance notes aren't that confusing.

Fragrance notes are simply the different ingredients that make up a fragrance.  In other words, citrus notes come from, well... citrus ingredients.

So when you smell a note of mandarin...

You're just smelling the mandarin orange ingredients in the fragrance (or at least an artificial fabrication of the smell of mandarin orange).

The easiest way to conceptualize fragrance notes is by a fragrance pyramid, with each layer of notes lasting progressively longer.

So let's begin by breaking down the pyramid, layer by layer...

Top Notes

Top notes (sometimes referred to as opening notes) are the scents you smell immediately after spraying on cologne or perfume.  Typically, these notes are the lightest and form your first impression of the scent, but only last between 5 - 20 minutes, depending on the scent itself and the concentration of the perfume.

Top notes tend to be citrus or floral notes.  Orange, bergamot, juniper berries, and herbs, such as lavender and sage, are very common opening notes.

Heart Notes

Heart notes are sometimes referred to as middle notes, as they make up the middle (or the heart) of a fragrance.  Heart notes also tend to last longer, anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour, since you know, they make up the "heart" of the cologne.

Some common heart notes include (but are not limited to): geranium, jasmine, cinnamon, and black pepper.

Base Notes

Not quite like that...

These are longest lasting notes of a cologne or perfume and form the foundation (base) of the perfume.  Base notes tend to begin creeping in after the top notes and may last long as 5+ hours, depending on the cologne and how it reacts with your skin and other conditions.

Base notes tend to be rich scents, and are typically comprised of woods and musk.  Common base notes include cedar and sandalwood (or any other type of wood), patchouli, amber, and musk.

The easiest way to identify any of the above layers of fragrance, is to note when they first appear.  Any immediate scents you pick up after spraying are the top notes.  Once those dissipate after 15 minutes, and you notice some jasmine and cinnamon for instance, those are the heart notes.  And of course, the longest lasting notes are base notes.

Time for an example...

Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue

This D&G cologne is a popular masculine scent.  Experience citrus top notes of juniper, grapefruit peel, and Sicilian mandarin, followed by heart notes of rosemary and rosewood, and spicy Szechuan pepper.  Oak moss, American muskwood, and incense form the base.

So, after all that, hopefully you see that fragrance notes aren't actually all that complicated.

1. I get it, tons of guys hate shaving and you very well could be part of that group. A major part of the reason so many dudes hate shaving is because of the way it makes their skin feel afterwards with all the skin irritation and razor burn. So you want a smoother more comfortable shave? Make sure to exfoliate that skin before! When you exfoliate your skin before shaving you're taking off the top dead layer of skin and allowing trapped hairs to grow properly and reducing the risk of future ingrown hairs after shaving. All exfoliated? Good, move onto the next step!

2. So you're moving on and applying your shaving cream or soap. Do me a favour, take half of it off of your hands or brush and rinse it down the sink. Ok, you're right, half might be a lot and I don't know exactly how much you're using so it might be an exaggeration, but it wouldn't surprise me if you're using too much. When you use more shaving cream/soap than needed, you're effectively reducing the closeness of your shave. This is caused by preventing the blade from getting as close to your skin as it needs to be. Another problem that cream/soap abundance causes is clogging up your razor and decreasing shave quality as a result. Another great change many guys can make when applying their cream or soap is using a brush to apply it rather than their hands. This allows the bristles to apply the soap or cream everywhere including getting in under the hairs.

3. Not so much of a shaver yourself? Thats ok, check out this next tip. Growing a beard is tough for a number of us and one of the most difficult parts of it is the patchiness that many experience. One way to try and combat this patchiness that so many hate is with the use of a Boar hair beard brush. Using a Boar hair brush at least once a day will help to stimulate hair follicles along with "train" your beard to grow and cover the patchy areas. Research has shown that boar hair brushes can bring blood to the surface of your skin thereby stimulating the hair follicles and helping your beard to grow the way you want it to!

4. Want to hear a bit more about "training" your beard? Check this one out! Love putting product in your hair, but still hate how patchy and sporadic your beard is? Take some of that hair product and tame the mess on your face! Just a tiny bit of high hold low shine product can do wonders for that crumb catcher of yours. Use it to tame down and hold the mangy thing in place to try and camouflage any patches that you may have!

5. This wouldn't be a proper 1000 Scents blog if it didn't contain any fragrance tips would it? Well, we've talked about this one before, but I'll bring it up again. Use a tiny bit of petroleum jelly on your neck (or other pulse points) before you spray some of your new 1000 Scents cologne! This allows the fragrance to sit on the petroleum jelly and project for longer as opposed to being absorbed by your skin and losing its scent. ... to explain common fragrance terms.

We'll start with a very common term that, while seemingly pretentious, captures a very common phenomenon...

1. Sillage

Pronounced like your yawning - "see-yazh" - sillage is the reason you wear fragrance in the first place.

Simply put: it's the trail of scent left behind you.

Now, unlike if you're wearing body spray, properly applied cologne should be alluring, strong but subtle (if that makes any sense).

After you walk by a crowd of people, they'll catch the sillage from your cologne.  And ideally, they shouldn't be gagging and coughing, but instead will be pleasantly surprised, and may even want to continue walking behind you.  Or they may even give you a tap on the shoulder and ask what fragrance you're wearing.

2. Gourmand

A gourmand is a fragrance that contains "food-heavy" scents, like cinnamon, vanilla, chocolate, raspberry, and so on.

Gourmands in particular respond differently to your body chemistry, so these types of scents tend to smell differently on different people.

While the goal isn't to smell like your mother's kitchen, these scents are quite pleasant, which is why many fragrances contain these notes.

Speaking of notes...

3. Notes

We've covered the various types of notes, ie., top, middle, and base in a previous blog post.

However, put simply, notes are the various "ingredients" that make up a fragrance.  Notes are the scents that you smell.

4. Drydown

After the top and middle notes of a fragrance finish, the drydown is the concluding phase of a fragrance where the base notes come out.

The drydown is the longest part of a fragrance's duration and is unique to individuals.  This is the reason why you shouldn't just base your preference for a fragrance on the initial top notes, as the drydown is specific to each person.

5. Aldehydes

Aldehydes are naturally occurring compounds, often found in flowers, such as roses.  Aldehydes found in perfumes/colognes are synthetic.  Therefore, they tend to smell slightly different from their natural counterparts.

While it's difficult to describe how they smell different, synethic aldehydes have a fresher spark to the scent.

6. Fougère

These types of fragrances are defined by their earthy, nature notes.  A cologne with pine, cedar, lavender, or other similar scents are considered to be a fougère.

7. Concentration

Fragrances are labelled based on their concentration as EDP, EDT, Parfum, and so on.  These labels categorize fragrances based on their perfume oils to alcohol ratio.  You can find a full breakdown of the various fragrance concentrations in another blog post here.

Concentration will affect the duration and strength of a particular scent.  A highly concentrated Parfum fragrance will tend to have a stronger smell and have a longer duration, and therefore require fewer, less frequent sprays to maintain its strength.  Hence, Parfum fragrances tend to be more expensive.

1. Stop focusing just on muscle gains in the gym! Now I do not have the stats, but I would be willing to guess that most guys focus the majority of their efforts on strength training/weight lifting, but a well rounded, usually healthier guy, would focus on strength training, cardio, and stretching. Go ahead and work on the three big lifts, but be sure to mix in some running, biking, hiking etc. along with some good stretching. It isn't all about having the biggest muscles in the gym (although that's cool), but rather having good limber pliable muscles that are going to treat you well far into the future!
2. Take your vitamins gentlemen. There is more to this health game than what meets the eye and vitamins are a perfect way to fill in the gaps that your diet may have in it. A simple multivitamin from your drugstore will do just fine, but be sure to keep consistent with it for best results!
3. Get a better sleep. Make sure your room is dark and cold and this will improve the quality of your sleep which we know is just as important as the quantity! Quantity shouldn't be skimped out on though; make sure that you are getting as close to 8 quality hours of sleep per night. This might mean that you have to leave your phone outside of the bedroom to avoid the temptation for some midnight scrolling!
4. Get that H20 in you! Most people can say that they need to drink more water, but just how much is enough? Well of course there are many variables like activity level, body mass, temperature/weather etc., but aiming for at least 3.5 litres a day is a good start! If you do this you're going to feel better, look better, have clearer skin, less eye bags, and an assortment of other great benefits so start right now.
5. Quit being so hard on yourself. Yes, this final one isn't so much about physical health as it is about mental health. It is really quit simple, forgive yourself for screwing up and move on with your life. I know, unfortunately this is easier said than done, but it is time that you start living in the present as opposed to focusing on what you did wrong in the past and who did you wrong in the past. Forgive and forget gentlemen, you will be much better off because of it!

Yes, this one may seem like a no brainer, but it might surprise you just how many people are not drinking enough water on the best of days let alone on the hottest days of the year. Total amount that should be consumed by each individual obviously differs due to many different variables, but a general rule of thumb is the 8 by 8 rule.
